### Why Boca Grande is the Best Place for Tarpon Fishing
**1. Perfect Conditions for Tarpon:**

Thousands of tarpon migrate to these waters from late April to early August. This migration creates an exciting experience for anglers.
**2. Rich History and Tradition:**
Boca Grande has a rich tarpon fishing history. The first tarpon caught on a rod and reel happened here in the late 1800s. We offer fishing trips that respect the area's history and the fish we pursue.

**The Ultimate Guide to Permit Fishing Offshore in Boca Grande with Capt. Shane Smetak**
Boca Grande, located on Florida's Gulf Coast, is a premier destination for anglers seeking the thrill of catching permit offshore. Known for their incredible strength, speed, and challenging fights, permit are among the most sought-after game fish in the area. As an experienced fishing guide, I, Capt. Shane Smetak, have spent years mastering the waters of Boca Grande to help anglers like you catch these elusive fish. In this comprehensive guide, I'll share everything you need to know about permit fishing offshore in Boca Grande, from the best techniques and gear to use to the ideal times to fish and conservation tips.
### Why Boca Grande is a Premier Destination for Permit Fishing
**1. Abundant Permit Population**
Boca Grande is renowned for its abundant permit population, particularly offshore around the numerous wrecks, reefs, and rock piles. These structures attract permit by providing a rich feeding ground of crabs, shrimp, and small fish, which are their primary food sources. The combination of deep water and plentiful food makes Boca Grande one of the top destinations for permit fishing.
**2. Clear Waters and Ideal Conditions**
The waters offshore from Boca Grande are typically clear and calm, providing ideal conditions for permit fishing. Clear water allows for sight fishing, where anglers can spot permit swimming near the surface or around structures. This visibility, combined with the typically mild weather conditions in Boca Grande, makes it a prime location for both novice and experienced anglers looking to target permit.
**3. Proximity to Productive Fishing Spots**
Boca Grande’s proximity to the Gulf of Mexico’s many productive fishing spots is another reason why it’s a top destination for permit fishing. With numerous wrecks, reefs, and natural rock formations within a short boat ride, anglers have easy access to some of the best permit fishing grounds in Florida. These areas provide perfect habitats for permit, making them reliable spots for finding these elusive fish.
### Best Techniques for Permit Fishing Offshore in Boca Grande
To increase your chances of landing a permit, it’s crucial to use the right techniques. Here are some of the most effective methods for permit fishing offshore in Boca Grande:
**1. Sight Fishing**
Sight fishing is one of the most exciting ways to catch permit. This technique involves spotting the fish and casting a bait or lure directly in front of them. Because permit have excellent eyesight, it’s important to approach stealthily and cast accurately. Polarized sunglasses are essential for reducing glare and spotting fish beneath the surface.
**Tips for Sight Fishing:**
- Move slowly and quietly to avoid spooking the fish.
- Use natural-looking baits like live crabs to mimic the permit’s natural prey.
- Cast ahead of the fish and allow the bait to sink naturally.
**2. Live Bait Fishing**
Using live bait is another highly effective method for catching permit. Permit are notorious for their selective feeding habits, but they are particularly fond of crabs and shrimp. When fishing with live bait, it’s essential to present the bait naturally to avoid suspicion.
**Tips for Live Bait Fishing:**
- Use small, live crabs or shrimp, which are the permit’s preferred food.
- Hook the crab through the corner of its shell to allow for natural movement.
- Present the bait close to the structure where permit are likely to be feeding.
**3. Jigging**
Jigging is a versatile technique that can be very effective for catching permit, especially when they are feeding near the bottom around structures. This method involves dropping a weighted jig to the bottom and then quickly jerking it up and down to mimic a fleeing prey item. Permit are attracted to the movement and often strike jigs out of curiosity or aggression.
**Tips for Jigging:**
- Use jigs that resemble crabs or shrimp in color and size.
- Drop the jig to the bottom and use a quick, jerking motion to mimic fleeing prey.
- Vary your jigging speed and motion to find what works best.
### Best Times to Fish for Permit Offshore in Boca Grande
Understanding the best times to fish can significantly increase your chances of success when targeting permit offshore in Boca Grande.
**1. Seasonal Patterns**
- **Spring and Summer:** These seasons are considered the best for permit fishing in Boca Grande. During the warmer months, permit move offshore to spawn and are often found around reefs and wrecks in deeper waters. The warm water temperatures increase their activity, making them more likely to feed aggressively.
- **Fall:** Fall can also be a productive time for permit fishing, especially as water temperatures begin to cool slightly. Permit are still active and can be found around offshore structures, but they may be less concentrated than in spring and summer.
- **Winter:** Winter is typically less favorable for permit fishing offshore due to cooler water temperatures and rougher seas. However, permit can still be caught in deeper waters where temperatures remain more stable.
**2. Tidal Movements**
Tides play a crucial role in permit fishing success. Permit often feed more actively during changing tides, particularly during the incoming tide when water movement stirs up the bottom and brings food into the area.
**Tips for Fishing the Tides:**
- Plan your fishing trips around the tide changes, focusing on the incoming tide for the best results.
- Fish near structures like wrecks and reefs where permit are likely to be feeding on crustaceans dislodged by the tide.
- Pay attention to tidal charts and adjust your strategy based on the tidal flow.
### Essential Gear for Permit Fishing Offshore in Boca Grande
Having the right gear is essential for a successful permit fishing trip. Here’s what you’ll need:
**1. Rod and Reel**
- **Medium to Heavy Rod:** A medium to heavy spinning or conventional rod is ideal for permit fishing. It provides the strength needed to handle the powerful runs of permit while offering enough sensitivity for detecting subtle bites.
- **High-Quality Reel:** A high-quality spinning or conventional reel with a smooth drag system is crucial for fighting permit. Look for a reel that can handle 200-300 yards of 20-30 lb braided line.
**2. Fishing Line**
- **Braided Line:** Braided line is recommended for permit fishing due to its strength and sensitivity. A 20-30 lb test braided line is a good choice for most permit fishing scenarios. Braided line also allows for longer casts and better control when fighting a permit around structures.
**3. Hooks and Leaders**
- **Circle Hooks:** Circle hooks are ideal when using live bait for permit. They increase hook-up rates and reduce the likelihood of gut-hooking the fish. Use size 2/0 to 4/0 circle hooks for most permit.
- **Fluorocarbon Leader:** A fluorocarbon leader of 30-40 lb test is recommended for permit fishing. Fluorocarbon is more abrasion-resistant than monofilament and less visible in the clear waters of Boca Grande.
**4. Additional Gear**
- **Polarized Sunglasses:** Essential for sight fishing, polarized sunglasses help reduce glare and allow you to see through the water’s surface, making it easier to spot permit.
- **Landing Net and Pliers:** A good landing net helps safely bring in your catch, while pliers are useful for removing hooks quickly and safely.

The abundance of baitfish, shrimp, and crabs in Gasparilla Sound makes it a prime feeding ground for snook throughout the year.
**2. Year-Round Fishing Opportunities**
One of the best aspects of snook fishing in Gasparilla Sound is the opportunity to catch them year-round. Florida’s mild climate allows for productive fishing in all seasons, although certain times of the year may offer better chances for catching trophy-sized snook. Whether it’s winter or summer, Gasparilla Sound provides excellent conditions for snook fishing, making it a great destination for any time of the year.

### Best Techniques for Snook Fishing in Gasparilla Sound
To maximize your success when fishing for snook in Gasparilla Sound, it’s important to use the right techniques. Here are some of the most effective methods:
**1. Live Bait Fishing**
Live bait is one of the most effective methods for catching snook. Snook are opportunistic feeders and will often go after live bait such as pilchards, pinfish, or shrimp. When fishing with live bait, it’s crucial to match the hatch, using bait that mimics the local prey.
**Tips for Live Bait Fishing:**
- Use a popping cork to keep your bait suspended at the right depth.
- Cast near mangroves, docks, or other structures where snook are likely to be hiding.
- Hook the baitfish through the nose or back to ensure a natural presentation.
**2. Artificial Lures**
Artificial lures can also be highly effective for snook fishing, especially when fishing around structure or during periods of low light. Topwater plugs, soft plastic swimbaits, and jerk baits are popular choices for targeting snook in Gasparilla Sound. Choose lures that resemble the local baitfish and adjust your retrieve speed to match the mood of the fish.
**Tips for Using Artificial Lures:**
- Early morning or late evening is ideal for using topwater plugs.
- Use a steady retrieve with soft plastics to mimic a wounded baitfish.
- Change lure colors based on water clarity; use lighter colors in clear water and darker shades in murkier water.
**3. Fly Fishing**
For anglers seeking a unique challenge, fly fishing for snook in Gasparilla Sound is an exciting option. Fly fishing requires precision casting and a delicate presentation, making it a rewarding technique for targeting snook, especially around mangroves and shallow flats. Using shrimp or baitfish patterns can entice snook to strike, especially during peak feeding times.
**Tips for Fly Fishing:**
- Use an 8 to 9-weight fly rod with a floating or intermediate line.
- Cast close to mangroves or other structures where snook are hiding.
- Use short, quick strips to mimic the movement of prey.
### Best Times to Fish for Snook in Gasparilla Sound
While snook can be caught year-round in Gasparilla Sound, understanding seasonal patterns can increase your chances of success.
**1. Seasonal Patterns**
- **Spring and Summer:** These seasons are prime time for snook fishing in Gasparilla Sound. Warmer water temperatures increase snook activity, and they are often found near shorelines, inlets, and around mangroves during this period. Summer, in particular, is when snook move to the beaches to spawn, making it an ideal time to target larger fish.
- **Fall:** Fall is another productive season for snook fishing. As temperatures cool, snook move back into the bays and estuaries, feeding aggressively to prepare for the winter months. This period provides excellent opportunities to catch snook on both live bait and artificial lures.
- **Winter:** In the winter, snook tend to move to deeper waters to stay warm. On sunny days, they may come into shallow flats or near warm water outflows to feed. Slow presentations with live bait or soft plastics work best during this time.
**2. Tidal Movements**
Tides play a crucial role in snook fishing success in Gasparilla Sound. Snook are ambush predators and often position themselves along current breaks, waiting for prey to come by with the moving tide. An incoming tide generally provides the best action as it brings baitfish into the shallows and stimulates feeding.
**Tips for Fishing the Tides:**
- Fish the last part of the incoming tide and the first part of the outgoing tide for the best results.
- Focus on areas with strong current flow, such as channels, inlets, and cuts.
- Pay attention to tidal charts and plan your trips around these movements.
### Essential Gear for Snook Fishing in Gasparilla Sound
Having the right gear is essential for a successful snook fishing trip. Here’s what you’ll need:
**1. Rod and Reel**
- **Medium to Heavy Rod:** A medium to heavy spinning rod with a fast action is ideal for snook fishing. It provides the power needed to handle large snook while still allowing for precise casts.
- **Spinning Reel:** A high-quality spinning reel with a smooth drag system is crucial. Look for a reel that can handle at least 150 yards of 20-30 lb braided line.
**2. Fishing Line**
- **Braided Line:** Braided line is recommended for snook fishing due to its strength and sensitivity. A 20-30 lb test braided line is a good choice for most snook fishing scenarios in Gasparilla Sound. Braided line also allows for longer casts and better control around structures.
**3. Hooks and Leaders**
- **Circle Hooks:** When using live bait, circle hooks are ideal as they increase hook-up rates and are less likely to gut-hook the fish. Use sizes 2/0 to 4/0 for most snook.
- **Fluorocarbon Leader:** A fluorocarbon leader of 30-40 lb test is recommended for snook. Fluorocarbon is more abrasion-resistant and less visible in the water, making it perfect for clear waters and wary fish like snook.
**4. Additional Gear**
- **Polarized Sunglasses:** Essential for spotting snook and reducing glare on the water, polarized sunglasses are a must-have for any angler.
- **Landing Net and Pliers:** A good landing net helps safely bring in your catch, while pliers are useful for removing hooks quickly and safely.

### Best Techniques for Redfish Fishing in Gasparilla Sound
To maximize your success when fishing for redfish in Gasparilla Sound, it's essential to use the right techniques. Here are some of the most effective methods:
**1. Sight Fishing**
Sight fishing is a popular and highly effective method for targeting redfish in the clear waters of Gasparilla Sound. This technique involves visually locating redfish before casting your line. With a good pair of polarized sunglasses, you can reduce glare and see through the water’s surface, spotting signs of redfish, such as tailing or mud plumes. Sight fishing requires a patient and stealthy approach but offers a thrilling and rewarding experience when you hook a fish.
**Tips for Sight Fishing:**
- Approach quietly to avoid spooking the fish.
- Use light tackle for a more natural presentation.
- Cast your bait or lure ahead of the fish's path.
**2. Live Bait Fishing**
Using live bait is one of the most effective ways to catch redfish in Gasparilla Sound. Redfish are opportunistic feeders, and live bait like shrimp, pinfish, and mullet can attract them easily. When using live bait, it's essential to hook the bait properly to ensure it moves naturally in the water.
**Tips for Live Bait Fishing:**
- Hook shrimp through the tail or horn to allow natural movement.
- Use a popping cork to keep your bait suspended at the right depth.
- Cast near mangroves, seagrass beds, or other structures where redfish are likely to hide.
**3. Artificial Lures**
Artificial lures provide versatility and are effective in various water conditions. Popular choices for redfish include soft plastic swimbaits, jerk baits, and topwater lures. Choose lures in colors that match the local baitfish and water clarity for the best results.
**Tips for Using Artificial Lures:**

- Opt for lures in natural colors like silver, gold, or green.
- Experiment with different retrieval speeds and patterns to find what works best.
### Best Times to Fish for Redfish in Gasparilla Sound
While redfish are available year-round in Gasparilla Sound, some seasons and times of day offer better opportunities. Understanding these patterns can help you plan your fishing trips more effectively.
**1. Seasonal Patterns**
- **Spring and Fall:** These are the most productive seasons for redfish fishing in Gasparilla Sound. During these times, water temperatures are moderate, and redfish actively feed in preparation for spawning. You'll find them schooling near shorelines, feeding on crustaceans and baitfish.
- **Summer:** In the summer, redfish remain active but often move to deeper, cooler waters during the hottest parts of the day. The best fishing occurs in the early mornings and late afternoons. Look for redfish around grass flats, mangroves, and channels.
- **Winter:** In winter, redfish tend to move to deeper holes and channels to stay warm. On sunny days, they may come into shallow waters to feed, especially during the midday when the sun warms the flats. Use slower retrievals and present baits close to the bottom to attract redfish in cooler water.
**2. Tidal Movements**
Tides play a significant role in redfish fishing success in Gasparilla Sound. Redfish feed more actively during changing tides, especially on an incoming tide when baitfish and crabs are washed into the shallows. High tides allow redfish to move into mangroves and other areas that are normally inaccessible, providing excellent opportunities for anglers to catch them in these spots. Check tidal charts and plan your trips around these movements for the best results.
### Essential Gear for Redfish Fishing in Gasparilla Sound
Having the right gear is crucial for a successful redfish fishing trip. Here’s what you’ll need:

**2. Fishing Line**
- **Braided Line:** Braided line is recommended for redfish fishing due to its strength and sensitivity. A 20-30 lb test braided line is a good choice for most redfish fishing scenarios in Gasparilla Sound. Braided line also allows for longer casts, which is helpful when sight fishing.
**3. Hooks and Leaders**
- **Circle Hooks:** Use circle hooks when fishing with live bait to increase your chances of a solid hookset and reduce the likelihood of gut-hooking the fish. Size 2/0 to 4/0 circle hooks are commonly used for redfish.
- **Fluorocarbon Leader:** A fluorocarbon leader of 20-30 lb test is ideal for redfish. It's more abrasion-resistant than monofilament and less visible in the water, making it perfect for clear waters like those in Gasparilla Sound.
**4. Additional Gear**
- **Polarized Sunglasses:** Essential for sight fishing, polarized sunglasses reduce glare and allow you to see through the water’s surface, helping you spot redfish more easily.
- **Pliers and a Landing Net:** A good pair of pliers will help you remove hooks safely, while a landing net makes it easier to bring the fish on board without causing harm.
### Conservation Tips for Redfish Fishing

Night fishing is a great way to target fish in our area. Most of the fish I target at night are Snook and Tarpon. Snook and Tarpon both feed very well at night and can be targeted year round, the size of the tarpon vary, but the average size we catch at night are 10-40lbs. This is a great trip if you want to get a snook or tarpon on the fly rod.
Fly fishing can be done for all species except permit, the permit are on nearshore reefs and typically in 35-55’ of water. I prefer fly fisherman who know how to fly fish, this is not a trip for someone who wants to try fly fishing and never done it before! Please be able to cast at least 30-40’ migratory tarpon fishing for the big tarpon require a cast of 60-100’ if you would like to try your fly fishing skills at some of the hardest game fish in the country, let’s go fly fishing! I myself am an avid fly fisherman and have been fly fishing for many many years.
